Summary
Until 2008 the Senegalese cigarette market was performing well, with rising total and per capita sales. However, a change in the way excise duty is levied resulted in a collapse in sales during 2009 and 2010, with only price cuts by suppliers helping to bring about market recovery. Sales are currently at 2 billion pieces in 2014, almost 40% up on 1990 levels.

Key Findings
- In 2011 a rise in sales of 16% was reported, with a 21% rise in 2012; in both cases, price cuts are believed to have been behind rising sales. In 2013, sales again recorded another strong increase of 21% approximately, to almost 2,450 million pieces. However, with a rise in excise duty coming in at the beginning of 2014 sales dropped back by 5.5%, to 2,000 million pieces

- The market has long been dominated by one company, MTOA.With the loss of licensed production from PMI and BAT, MTOA's share was down at 61% in 2009, and this down trend continued, with a share equal to 49% in 2014

- Cigarette volumes are expected to surpass2.80 billion pieces in 2024, meaning a level of more than 32% above that registered in 2014
