The market is dominated by one vendor, Medtronic, which acquired Covidien in January 2015; however, CAS Medical Systems has been a strong competitor for several years and Nonin Medical entered the market in 2010. CAS Medical utilizes a different technology from Medtronic (Covidien) and Nonin. Both technologies perform the same monitoring capabilities, but CAS Medical’s technology utilizes laser light to measure oxygen saturation, while Covidien and Nonin use light emitting diodes (LED). There is currently a trend towards to adopt laser based oximetry as this is known to produce a more accurate depiction of a patient’s oxygen saturation levels.

The technology for cerebral oximetry has been available for many years; however, despite high growth rates, cerebral oximetry is not considered standard of care. Until clinicians can understand the displayed value in a relative form, market growth will be restricted. Increased clinical research into the benefits of cerebral oximetry monitoring and recent evidence supporting improved patient outcomes serve as drivers for greater awareness and adoption among specialists.

Cerebral oximetry is a non-invasive technology that continuously monitors cerebral tissue oxygen saturation through optical techniques. More specifically, trans-cranial cerebral oximetry is a method to detect cerebral hypoxia and to avoid cerebral dysfunctions. Brain tissue saturation measurements are critical to monitoring the level of cerebral hypoperfusion. When coupled with pulse oximetry, cerebral oxygen saturation readings allow healthcare professionals to establish the effects of cerebral metabolism changes regionally and balance local cerebral oxygen supply (versus demand). When used in conjunction with other vital signs measurements, cerebral oxygenation measurements are effective at improving patient outcomes, such as cutting stroke incidences after open heart surgeries. Some recent studies include those within the following medical areas: adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, sleep studies, neurological intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency departments.
