A final abutment is a metal piece that connects to a dental implant via an abutment screw. The abutment further functions as a connector between the implant and final outer crown placed on top of the implant. Often times, a provincial abutment is administered, but ultimately it must be replaced by a final abutment to ensure a permanent solution. Final abutments are offered in a variety of material types including titanium, steel, ceramic, zirconia and even gold.

Ideally the markets for final abutments and dental implants should be perfectly correlated as the products go hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Mexico. This is best explained by the dominance of two-stage implant surgery procedures, which entails a three to six month lag between surgeries. As abutments are placed during the second surgical procedure, the delay may permit the abutment placement to be carried over into the next year, thereby dampening abutment sales. Nonetheless, as the number of implant procedures continues to grow, the market for final abutments will as well. Stock abutments historically comprised and continue to constitute the majority of the final abutment market. Given that the general trend in the implant market is favorable of inexpensive solutions, the market for stock abutments is still growing as they offer a less expensive solution compared to alternatives. Despite the cost-savings offered by stock abutments, technologically advanced alternatives such as CAD/CAM or custom abutments are beginning to adopt popularity. Nonetheless, the switch-over to these counterparts will be slow as the economy remains to be in a fragile state.
