Central venous catheters (CVCs) are used for gaining immediate, high-flow vascular access. CVCs are inserted via the large internal jugular, subclavian and femoral veins. The larger diameter of central veins compared with peripheral veins allows CVCs to have higher potential flow rates and accommodate more lumens. CVCs are commonly used for parenteral nutrition, blood transfusions, blood draws and medication and chemotherapy delivery. CVCs have long been the standard device used for gaining vascular access in emergency situations where patients require large volumes of fluids in short periods of time. CVCs have long been the standard device used to gain vascular access.
