China now represents approximately 50% of global chemical capacity, up from about 15% just two decades ago, and is building 70% of new global capacity additions through 2027. Around 18.7 million tons of chemical capacity were added in China in 2024 alone. Chinese overcapacity has driven global commodity chemical prices to multi-year lows, forced significant plant closures in Europe, and reshaped global trade flows. The effective U.S. tariff rate on Chinese goods amounts to approximately 40%, hurting chemicals demand from key buyer sectors. However, export losses to the U.S. are being partly compensated by increased shipments to the EU, Africa, and Asia. Sinopec set an ethylene production record of 13.47 million metric tons in 2024 and is building a $6.4 billion petrochemical JV in Fujian and a complex in Saudi Arabia with Aramco. China's chemical production growth is expected to slow to 1.3% in 2026 as housing oversupply reduces construction chemicals demand.

This report provides significant competitor information, analysis, and insight critical to the development and implementation of effective marketing and R&D programs.
